SPACE Gallery’s new Exhibit: “Fourteen Thousand Words”

“Fourteen Thousand Words” A group exhibition of current photography major students from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA The work in this show ranges from fine art, conceptual, to fashion and documentary. Sam Haligman’s fine art editions, are poppy, cleanly printed and make the entry to the gallery eclectic and cool. Across from Sam hangs Yves Truong’s fashion work exploring the glamorous and sensual side of a woman on a night out. Further down the East wall we have the work of Kahi Le as the artist documents the progression of learning to swim. Next we have Joy Hseih, as she explores dogs up close and personal. Photos of “juni” seem to take on extensively human expression. On the West wall, we have conceptual pieces by Jennifer young depicting animal abuse using stuffed animals to represent the abuse perpetrated on the subjugated. Jennifer says, this work is ‘about what is known and not known.” Further down the wall is Takashi Koga with some beautiful ‘chem-prints’ that incorporate stark design and land driven patterns that at least this writer believe recall vistas and horizons in forgotten lands. On the Monolith wall, the work of Rose Hale hangs. This is siholoutted plant life cross processed in order to play with soft and yet stark contrasting colours. Her work hangs as three perfect squares with a square wall. Simply stunning. In ‘The backSPACE we welcome Alice Yean Le, with three pieces one seemingly inspired by japanese water color works and the others recalling beautiful and haunting imagery of foilage, the set being called, “House of Many Ghosts.” Alongside Alice Le’s work is Troy Reyles continually explores the relationship between the landscape and the human presence. His images are from an ongoing series, Pictures From The Edge Of The World. Josh Schaedel documents not only a place and its digression from a home, to a house, to a place, and eventually a landscape, but was a way for Josh to explore his own inner thought and frustrations with the most recent recession that started in 2008. Nils white’s series is about a Swedish town in Northern California called Kingsburg, where he went back to photograph memories that have been slowly deteriorating. Ties into memories about his biological father. Adam Senate Diminishing Returns is a series of photographs detailing the decreasing numbers of family owned restaurants on Lankershim Blvd in North Hollywood, California. As the independently owned restaurants disappear, fast food and chain stores take their place. At the back wall in the gallery is the work of Patrick J. Kim. His work illustrates both objectivity and confession. This work illuminates the world of a man (Kim’s grandfather), who is homebound and ill. The work is effective, enlightening and beautifully composed. The tint of the work effectively propels the viewer into the a spiral of one man’s daily life. SPACE GALLERY OPENED “THE HOURS: REFLECTIONS ON AN EPHEMERAL WORLD” THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF NATALIE FRANCO ON MARCH 9TH. THE OPENING WAS BUSY AND VIBRANT.

“Dark Home”

he photographic work of Natalie Marie Franco. Franco is a much lauded Mexican-American fine art photographer based in Los Angeles. Her work explores people and environments on an intimate scale adopting a voyeuristic approach of shooting. Franco creates a visual reticulation of picturesque imagery hidden with deep repressed undertones from the subconscious, memories and dreams. Franco is known for her signature dark prints.

About the Show- The work of Natalie Franco is a revealing passage that dives right into unconscious excreting detailed memories from dreams and destinations. Noted for her trademark available lighting and intensely dark prints, Franco’s style commands the darkness to be confronted. “The Hours” is a slow time lapse excursion into Franco’s succession of images and thoughts during slumber. Lacking sensory when dreaming; the human mind is always recording. These are her recordings.

HIGH LIFE FOR A LOW LIFE (The work of Jaime FLAN Munoz)

Show statement: (In “Flan’s” own words)…

I am a painter who paints images that reflect my experience growing up in Southern California. Some of the main concepts that I focus on in my work revolve around the common issues within cultural identity, painting as a form of technology, childhood experiences, and the saturated media. I focus on these points because these concepts I believe are what formed and continue to form the identity of who I am today and in the future. In my paintings I articulate these concepts through the exploration of textile designs, symbols collected from religious experiences, and symbols collected from the various people and environments I grew up in, particularly with graffiti and the local gangs. Some of these symbols include, the cross, the three dotted, “mi vida loca” (my crazy life), and the symbols and patterns that were commonly scribbled on school desks and class tests of any “average” kid I grew up with. I use the cartoon charter as a major reference point to my childhood and my career as an “artist”. I then focus on other issues such as the saturated media or cultural identity that can then tie into the character that I choose for the painting. For example, in the painting of the bear baker titled “Bimbo”, I explore my relationship to my culture through a Mexican product. This logo that I was so familiar with through the experiences of going with my mother to to super markets that marketed towards latinos and products that marketed towards kids was some of my earliest memories of me really identifying with my culture in an environment outside of my home or the spanish speaking hour at the closest church or the ESL group at school. Then by countering the corporations marketing strategy I enjoy de-idealizing the logo of the cute bear baker dressed in bright white. I do so by adding stains to his clothes, socially unacceptable hair on his chest, and unprofessional tattoo on his arm while at the same time referencing the Loony-Toons face card with Porky pig saying at the end of every show,”da da dats ol folks”.

Since my first day of orientation in Cal Poly Pomona, I have been warned that Pomona is “dangerous” and “ghetto.” Therefore, in my four years of college, I felt discouraged in exploring the little city. It wasn’t until I ventured out into a vintage clothing shop called “La Bomba” on Second Street, that I was enlightened the treasures that lie within Downtown Pomona.

JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK APRIL 20TH 2013.

Official meeting place and time: Cottonwood Spring at 10:00 am, and we will be there till 11:30, then continue north.

Enter the park at the South entrance off the 10 Fwy. Go to the Cottonwood Visitors Center to buy your park pass use the restrooms, buy souveniers at the store etc. Fom there it is a short drive to Cottonwood Spring (a mile or two I think). It’s like a small oasis. You will see the native Palm Trees. This will be our meeting place.

The area is small enough that we can’t miss each other. It’s a good place to take photos while we are waiting for other members to arrive.

Welcome to SPACE GALLERY a place for the visual arts. SPACE is first and foremost an eclectic photographic gallery jurying photographic artists from Los Angeles and all over the world. We holdThemed shows once per month. With a visual arts history dating back from the early eighties, SPACE personnel bring a wealth of art history and photographic arts knowledge to the community at large. We offer select classes in photography and promote 3 juried lines of fine art apparel each year. We have a music night one time per month and also offer SPACE as a meeting place to select groups. Welcome to SPACE.
